LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- This is time of the summer when children report "being bored." Camp Wonderopolis is a free online camp you can enjoy now, have tons of fun and get your mind ready for the school year.
Wonderopolis is part of the National Center for Families Learning. Â The website is a great resource to keep children thinking and learning well beyond the classroom. The online camp's "Wonder Coliseum" is a popular stop on the website. Â One of the most popular wonders is about golf and the question of "Why Do Golf Balls Have Dimples?" Â CLICK HERE for the answer.
Mini-golf is one of the favorite activities of their summer camp. Spokesperson Emily Kirkpatrick and Camp Wonderopolis participant Grant Falls show how to set up a mini-golf course. And they explain how golf is an exercise in asking questions.Â
Golf and even mini-golf can be educational. It's just a matter of looking at all the skills it takes to make a successful golfer to see how it is a lesson in physics, geometry and math.Â
Once you've created clubs and a ball, set up obstacles and created your own tunnel, straight fairway and pipe, then you're ready to play and learn.Â
Learning is about asking questions. So mini-golf should start with asking - what obstacles are the hardest to clear? How many swipes does it take to get your ball in the hole? Â Physics plays an important role in swinging the golf club. Two important components are swinging speed and having a loose grip. It's important to have good swinging speed to hit the ball hard enough for the appropriate distance. Having a loose grip on your club allows your wrists to rotate during the swing, which results in the golf club being able to straighten out, in return increasing the speed of your swing.
