LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A total of 83 veterans are taking off from Louisville Tuesday to Washington, D.C. on Honor Flight Bluegrass.

The veterans will visit the war memorials, and then go to Arlington National Cemetery.

Honor Flight Bluegrass Chairman Jeff Thoke visited WDRB Mornings on Monday and described how important the flight is for some veterans.

Honor Flight Bluegrass is a way to give back to the veterans and give them a proper "welcome home" after some of them weren't able to receive that when they returned home years ago.

"This is a way for us to correct a wrong," Thoke said on WDRB Mornings.

The veterans on board will be representing World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Officials say the veterans of different wars have different reactions to the reception.

"It varies for all the veterans. For World War II veterans it's very joyous, while the Korean is a little more subdued," Thoke said. "It's really incredible for the Vietnam veterans. Think about it, when they came home from the war they were told to get out of their uniforms and put on civilian clothes."

The veterans will be returning home around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. People are encouraged to bring their family and friends to welcome back the veterans and show gratitude for the heroes.
