LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Gardening and growing beautiful plants without a yard is not off limits. You can always bring some new life and color to your living space after a long cold winter with container gardening.

And if you make the right planting choices, you can container garden through all four seasons.

“One plant that I love to put in my containers are Boxwoods. I call them Jeff-proof because I kind of plant it, water it, give it a little pat, then say, ‘If you don’t survive, it’s your fault.’ So they tend to do very well for me,” said Jeff Wallitsch of Wallitsch Gardens.

He says Hydrangeas also work well in containers, but you can really pick any plant you want including trees and bushes.

“You can also even introduce some fruits like blueberries,” Wallitsch said. “Its one of my favorite. The flower is beautiful. That's why I love the blueberries. They have great fall colors. They're not just edible, they’re also used for ornamental purposes.”

Other than picking out the right plants for you and your porch or patio, it’s imperative to get a pot with a drainage hole on the bottom and don't skimp on the potting soil.

“We always say to spend your money on the potting soil because that is really where you're going to have your success. If you get really bad potting soil, like really heavy clay and it just doesn’t drain well, you’re plants aren’t going to survive and they're not going to do well,” Wallitsch said.

If you plant your perennials, the plants that come back every season, in that good potting soil, the soil is good for about five years until you have to replant.

If that’s too long for you, you can also change up your plant varieties with the season.

“I'll have a couple other little pots where I can go in and plant my summer annuals or fall annuals or anything really that I want to put in there and then you can kind of rotate it, switch it out, so you’re not just having the same thing over and over again. And then you can just make a really cool outdoor living space to extend your space,” Wallitsch said.
