LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Even your plants need a good haircut every once in a while to keep them healthy and looking great.
“Absolutely. To help promote more flowering, to keep them clean, it's always a great idea to deadhead your flowers. Deadheading is when you’re taking off old spent flowers to help promote new ones,” said Jeff Wallitsch of Wallitsch Gardens.
- It's important to know where to cut. Snap off the entire bloom stem to promote more blooms.
- Now some flowers will only bloom once for the season, but should still be cleaned up. Cut off any dead leaves so the plant isn’t wasting energy.
- You should cut right above a leaf to help prevent against disease and insects getting in the stems.
- Pruning the base of the plant also creates airflow to prevent mold, mildew, and disease.
- The timing of your pruning is also be important.
“Pruning evergreens -- a great time to do that is from May until the end of August. That way if you do prune on it, it's going to promote new growth and then that new growth is going to harden off before we get a frost or a freeze,” Wallitsch said.
