LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – It's never too late to get started on the right foot when gardening and landscaping. And it’s always best to have some go-to tools on-hand.
Jeff Wallitsch of Wallitsch Gardens said these are the tools you’ll need:
- A good pair of pruners is number one. It can be used for small trees, shrubs, and plants.
- It needs to have a sharp blade to make clean cuts. That way the plant can heal better. A dull blade will make jagged cuts, which can lead to disease and insects getting inside the plant.
- Same rules go for loppers, which are used for larger trees and shrubs.
- When buying pruning tools, look at the measurements on it. It will tell you the thickness it can cut.
- A three-in-one tool is beneficial to have on hand. One example is the Hori Hori, a Japanese gardening tool that includes a garden knife, digger, and weeder all in one.
- A hand trowel is great for weeding and planting bulbs or small annuals and perennials.
- A spade shovel is best for planting trees and shrubs opposed to a rounded shovel.
“So the rounded shovel is good to get all the loose dirt out of the hole. This [spade] is going to make it where you’re going to be able to make that hole and kind of loosen up the soil,” Wallitsch said.
