LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Raise funds for a great cause and get some exercise while you're at it.

The 2023 Kindness Warrior Walk for Down syndrome is Saturday, Oct. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Waterfront Park. The walk is 1.52 miles, and there is an option for a shorter walking distance.

Whether you have Down syndrome, know someone with it, or just want to show your support, all are welcome to come support and raise money for a common cause.

Down Syndrome of Louisville Executive Director Julie Torzewski and Katie Croom stopped by WDRB Mornings Friday to tell us more about the organization and its mission.

"Our Kindness Warrior Walk has been going on for many years," Torzewski said. "The name has changed, but we like the name 'Kindness Warrior' because that means someone who supports individuals with disabilities and really comes out and wants to be around our members and celebrate Down syndrome with us. So we invite the entire to come out tomorrow morning. Festivities start at 9. It's $21 -- which Down syndrome is the third copy of the 21st chromosome, so we like the number 21. That's why we do odd numbers."

So far, Down Syndrome of Louisville has raised $266,000 of the $275,000 goal.

All of the money will be put to good use.

"We are the largest Down syndrome association in the world," Torzewski said. "We have programs from pre-birth until end-of-life, so there are many things we're doing to make sure our members reach their full potential. One of those is our employment support. So we put people in person-centered jobs -- things they like to do."

Croom is one of the people the organization has placed.

"I work at Mission BBQ," she said. "I clean the tables, and get the trays."

Croom said she enjoys the work and talking with customers. She was recently named "Teammate of the Month."
