LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's a tradition from Mexico and Latin America that is thousands of years old.

Keith Kaiser learns about the Day of the Dead Celebration in Oldham County.

The Oldham County History Center celebrates Day of the Dead this year with a parade, special guest speaker, Mariachi band, special food, and dancers. 

Beautiful altars will be display built by different families and individuals that honor memories of those deceased in their lives.

A Day of the Dead Celebration is a traditional cultural event that honors deceased loved ones by celebrating their life lives and contributions.

Schedule of activities:

  • 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Booth activities - face painting, Altar exhibit open, Food Trucks

  • 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Parade will be led by Jovani Mariachi Sensacion, beginning at the History Center and traveling down Main Street and back to the History Center.

Costume contest featuring traditional Day of the Dead costumes.

  • 6:00 p.m.

Special Guest Speaker:  Lauren Hunter, The Bluegrass Death Doula

  • 6:45 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Dance Performers and Music - Mexico Lindo Dancers, Day of the Dead Youth and Adult Performers, and Columbia Dancers.
