LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Mayor of Shepherdsville has just completed his first year on the job, and he has some things to be proud of.

Mayor Jose Cubero visited WDRB Mornings on Wednesday to talk about his first year in office, and what his plans for 2024 look like.

In 2023, Cubero worked on many projects, and said his team laced up their roller skates and skated through. Their biggest goal was to work on developing activities for families, as well as making the city a cleaner and safer place to call home.

This past year was full of lots of meetings and investing time and money, while also talking about the goals for the city. Cubero said 2024 is the year that shovels will go into the ground to bring those goals to life.

Shepherdsville will soon be home to a brand new aquatic center, with indoor and outdoor facilities for families to use. The center will feature an indoor pickleball field, as well as other things.

The downtown area will be redeveloped into a "town square" aspect, something Shepherdsville has not had before. Other developments to look for this year around the city include a skatepark, a splashpad, an all-inclusive playground, and a 2,000-seat amphitheater that will sit right on the Salt River.

Along with family activities, Cubero is also looking to build up the housing developments in the city as more buildings and businesses start to increase around the interstate and the city itself.

"The biggest challenge I face in Shepherdsville is trying to keep the small town mentality while also trying to build the city into something bigger," Cubero said. "It is difficult when the interstate runs right through our community, but with these things we will be bringing to the city this year will help keep that small town mentality that everyone loves."

Cubero said his biggest goal is to develop areas and businesses that will keep people in the city, instead of them having to drive to Louisville for things.
