LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The effort to honor local veterans during the holidays is once again underway.

The Wreaths Across America campaign officially kicked off Monday, with the goal of placing a live balsam wreath on every grave at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville.

Each year, volunteers, families, and community partners come together to make sure thousands of veterans are remembered.

"We want to honor all veterans, whether we have family buried here or not," said Susan Calme, a representative with Wreaths Across America. "It's important for all of us to take the time to thank those who served, even if we didn't know them personally."

Brownsboro Hardware and Paint is once again joining the effort to raise funds for the wreaths. Owner Doug Carroll said it's now the fifth year his stores have been involved — a tradition that began when customers showed strong support for the cause.

"Right from the start, our customers were so passionate about helping," Carroll said. "We were able to get a wreath on every grave last year, and we want to keep that going."

Carroll said the ceremony itself is powerful and emotional for everyone who attends. "It's such a meaningful experience — from hearing the bugle to seeing the color guard. It's a great event to share with your family and a way to teach kids about the sacrifices made for our freedom."

Wreath sponsorships are $17 each and can be purchased online or in person at either Brownsboro Hardware and Paint location. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 1.

The wreath-laying ceremony will take place at noon on Saturday, Dec. 13, at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery.
