LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- People will participate around Kentuckiana will be able to participate in BIke To Work Day this week.

May is National Bike Month as Bike to Work Day is scheduled for Friday, May 16. In Louisville, the city will host group led rides by volunteer ride captains. According to a news release, the rides will depart from five different locations and end downtown at the Plaza on Fourth at 222 S. 4th Street for coffee, donuts and prizes.

Riders in Louisville are asked to meet at one of five locations at 7 a.m. and the rides will leave at 7:30 a.m.

Those locations include:

  • Iroquois Park, meet at the amphitheater.
  • Seneca Park, meet at the basketball courts.
  • Big Four Station in Jeffersonville, Indiana, meet at the Big Four Station near the pedestrian bridge ramp
  • George Rogers Clark Park, meet by the tennis courts on Thruston Avenue.
  • Shawnee Park, meet at the parking lot on the north side of the park by the tennis courts and baseball field.

After the morning ride, groups will meet back at the Plaza on Fourth at 5:30 p.m. for return rides.

“Cycling promotes healthier lifestyles, reduces traffic and cuts down on air pollution,” Chris Butz, a transportation planner at Louisville Metro Public Works and program manager of Bike Louisville, said in a news release. “By participating in National Bike to Work Day, people can experience the physical and mental health benefits of cycling, while also contributing to a more sustainable environment. In addition, this is a great opportunity to connect with others and make new friends. At the end of the day, it’s a simple yet impactful way to make a positive difference for yourself and our community.”
