LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Neighbors in Louisville's Shawnee neighborhood are working together to fight gun violence by giving young people more things to do.
An event held Wednesday evening provided snacks and fun activities for kids while their parents were given information about programing available at the Shawnee Community Center this summer.
As part of a partnership with local nonprofit Robert Jamison Ministries, kids will be able to learn situational awareness skills, conflict resolution and emergency first aid response.
Demetrius McDowell, the CEO of Louisville nonprofit Bosses Not Bangers Inc. — which focuses on reducing violence — said the summer programs are a great way to keep kids doing something constructive.
"Any type of gifts and talents that they have, they're given resources to enhance those things," McDowell said. "So you've got some of our young people who are artists by music, artists by drawing, and maybe even want to go on some type of profession, this is a starting place for that."
The partnership also includes the city's Office of Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods, Black Lives Matter, INSPIRE 1, Sacred Earth Community Garden, Project One and the Community Foundation of Louisville.
Summer programming is available for kids ages 5 to 15, as well as young adults ages 15 to 25.
