LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Metro Police Department wants to help you get rid of unused cellphones you no longer need while helping crime victims at the same time.Â
LMPD's Victim Services Unit will be hosting "PHONE IT FORWARD" from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 6 during its 2024 National Night Out at all eight patrol divisions.
With support from the Louisville Metro Police Foundation, LMPD's Victim Services Unit has teamed up with the 911 Cell Phone Bank to collect old smart devices, according to a post on LMPD's Facebook account. It's a great way to help victims of crime by donating your old devices while attending the family-friendly event as we work to make our community safer.
The devices will be restored to their factory settings, which ensures all data is erased. If that doesn't work for some reason, the device will be recycled through a licensed R2 recycler to keep e-waste out of landfills.
The phones repurposed phones will then be distributed to law enforcement and victim services agencies and given to vulnerable residents, including victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, and violent crime in communities.
