LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in the Chickasaw neighborhood Tuesday for a new home designed by Family Scholar House.Â
The innovative energy-efficient home could be a big part of the future of affordable housing in Louisville.Â
The single-family home now sits on what used to be a vacant lot at 913 South 42nd Street. The steel modular home was built in partnership with MMY US. It earned a LEED Platinum certification -- which is the highest achievement for sustainable design and construction practices.
It's the first home of its kind to earn that recognition in the entire United States. The home was manufactured in a matter of weeks by Louisville-based MMY US.
"This beautiful, efficient, modern home was manufactured, delivered and set in mere weeks," said Robin Bartram Brown, MMY US CEO, adding:Â "it now stands ready to welcome a family into a future of energy efficiency, sustainability, and comfort."
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg attended Tuesday's ceremony, and said the newly unveiled home is "going to be owned by a Louisville family very, very soon."
It will will serve as a prototype for similar homes, and be a big part of affordable housing options for families earning 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), according to a news release.Â
"We need more affordable housing of all types," Greenberg said during Tuesday's ceremony. "We need more apartments, we need more duplexes, we need more condos -- and yes, we need more single-family affordable home ownership opportunities. And we are showing the country today, that with this innovative model, we are leading the way right here in Louisville, Kentucky."Â
Mayor Greenberg said the new homes create new jobs while providing more affordable housing options for local residents. Greenberg also said home ownership will also help create generational wealth.Â
The Family Scholar House mission is to "end the cycle of poverty and transform our community by empowering families and youth to succeed in education and achieve life-long self-sufficiency," according to its website.
