CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- The Clarksville Police Department has announced three arrests in connection with a May shooting at an apartment complex that wounded five people.

Three suspects were in court on Tuesday including 20-year-old Luke Elliott, 21-year-old Khyron Murphy-Gant and 20-year-old Maleea Roland.

The shooting happened just after midnight on May 31 during a party at the Bend Apartment complex in the 1900 block of Greentree Blvd. Police said they believe more than 100 people were at the party, which was hosted by Roland who was an employee of the apartment complex.

In a news conference on Tuesday, Clarksville Police Captain Jeff Kennedy said flyers had been posted on social media about the party telling people about the event and "not to bring guns."

Kennedy said investigators have had a hard time getting witnesses to come forward.

"We said from the night of, let’s let this play out over the next several weeks and see what kind of information can be developed, but unfortunately we didn’t - although a lot of people were interviewed in this case - we didn’t get as much cooperation from the party-goers as we had hoped," Kennedy said.

Elliott is charged with aggravated battery, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm.

Murphy-Gant is facing charges of aggravated battery, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, intimidation, pointing a firearm, and four counts of criminal recklessness.

Both Elliott and Murphy-Gant claim the shootings were in self defense.

Roland is charged with maintaining a common nuisance and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Neighbors at the apartment complex expressed relief following the arrests.

"It makes you wary. You have a good community and then stuff happens," said Lanisha Hambric. "I feel safer - makes me like living over here. Get my money’s worth for living over here. I didn’t pay for all that."

Police believe they have all the parties responsible for the shooting, and they are glad no one was seriously hurt.

Captain Kennedy said it's concerning how many young people have guns. "Definitely are seeing a concerning large trend with late teens, early twenties individuals that have access to firearms, are carrying them and maybe don’t have the mental faculties to carry them responsibly."

His advice to parents? "Please start parenting your kids. Don’t rely on us doing it after the fact, when we’re in a defense. You’re in a role where you can play offense. You can be ahead of this, but when we get called, we’re in defense, and we have to pick up the pieces."
