LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thousands of runners made their way around Louisville Saturday morning during Kentucky Derby Festival's mini-Marathon and Marathon.

Competitors received a medal that is rose gold and embellished with the Derby Festival's Pegasus symbol surrounded by a starburst design. The races started simultaneously at 7 a.m. on Main Street near Slugger Field.

Runners went down Main Street into Portland, then turned back toward downtown going through the Russell neighborhood. Competitors then went through Old Louisville to Churchill Downs. Mini-marathon runners turned back to downtown Louisville from there, but marathon runners continued to Iroquois Park before making their way back to the finish line.

For some runners, it was their first time competing in the race.

"It hurts a little bit but you just want to be able to have that mindset and actually finish something," said Garrett Greenwell. "Actually do something cool so when you cross that finish line it is a great feeling.
