LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana State Police are encouraging people to take precautions ahead of the solar eclipse on Monday.
A total solar eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024. It will be the first since the Great American Eclipse in 2017 and the last until Aug. 2044. Louisville will be at 99.3% totality, when the eclipse occurs between 1:49 p.m. and 3:07 p.m., but there are parts of southern Indiana that will be in 100% totality including Jasper, Paoli, and Seymour.
ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said traffic has increased on main roads in southern Indiana this weekend. Police have reported multiple crashes on Interstate 65.
Wheeles said people should plan to arrive early, stay put and leave if they're interested in seeing the solar eclipse. Police also recommend people fill up their gas tanks before driving, along with packing food and beverages.
"The Indiana State Police will have extra troopers out monitoring traffic to make it a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone," Wheeles posted on Facebook.
