LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville authorities asked the public to avoid an area of west Louisville due to a train derailment Saturday morning.
The train derailment occurred in the area of 13th and Broadway and the public was asked to avoid to 16th Street.
CSX said the CSX train derailed 10 empty railcars.
Authorities said there's no danger to the public or known leaks of hazardous materials.
Rerailing operations are underway and the cause is under investigation.
One family from Indiana saw the derailment on social media and wanted to see it in-person.
"I was in Indiana and I was like 'oh my gosh there's a train derailment,'" said Collin Chapman, a train enthusiast. "I want to go see it."
Chapman and his family are from Corydon. They travel the country looking at trains.
"I've never seen a train derailment in real life so I came up here and thought this is something," Chapman said. "I haven't seen it before."
The official cause of the derailment hasn't been released yet, but Chapman said it could have been several factors.
"Probably something happened where it was just too light and the train pulled too hard and it caused it to just flip right there," Chapman said.
A CSX spokesperson said Saturday evening that rerailing operations were underway to safely move the derailed cars and restore the area.
CSX is investigating the cause of the derailment.
