LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A World War II veteran celebrated his 102nd birthday in Louisville this weekend.

James "Ralph" Cochran was a radio operator in the United States Army Air Forces from 1943-46. He served as a gunner and radio operator in World War II.

Cochran has been a life-long Kentuckian. He was born Jan. 26, 1923 in Lynnville and spent most of his life in Hopkinsville. He moved to Louisville in his older age to be closer to family.

On Sunday, members of local ROTCs and other groups visited Cochran for a birthday celebration.

"I can't express enough how I'm feel because this is amazing," Cochran said. "I didn't think anything would happen like this."

Cochran was presented with some recognitions and had some birthday cake.

"He is part of the greatest generation and World War II veterans are unfortunately leaving us at an alarming number," said Darrell Olson, U.S. Army Cadet Command CST Project Management Specialist Ceremonies & Special Events. "It's very important to recognize our World War II veterans."
