LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Triple A is commemorating National Slow Down, Move Over day by reminding drivers to be careful when you see crews working on roadsides.
Slow Down, Move Over day falls on the third Saturday in October. Each year, about 23 roadside workers and first responders are killed while working on the side of the road, and hundreds more are hurt while working on disabled vehicles.
On Friday, officials from Triple A East Central, The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, and Southeast Towing talked about the dangers of working on the side of streets, highways and interstates.
"People need to either move over into the opposite lane of the emergency lane of where that car is stalled or if they can't move over, to slow down," said Andy Erhart, regional manager of AAA East Central. "The law in its entirety is to save lives."
Despite laws being passed in all 50 states, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that 71 percent of Americans are unaware of Move Over laws in their state.
