LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville man is facing animal cruelty and torture charges after investigators said they found a dead dog in a backyard and a home in severe unsanitary condition.

Police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Christopher Schiefelbein.

According to court records, Louisville Metro Animal Services responded to the home after reports involving abandoned animals. Investigators said Schiefelbein admitted he moved out of the residence in December, leaving behind a cat and three dogs, but told officers he still checked on the animals multiple times a day.

Inside the home, officers reported widespread filth, including animal waste covering floors and about two inches of feces in a bathtub, according to court records.

Investigators also found a partially buried dog in the backyard. A necropsy later determined the animal died from starvation, officials said.

Schiefelbein is charged with animal cruelty, torture of a dog or cat, and related offenses. He is scheduled to appear in court June 15.
