LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A woman is dead after she was hit by a vehicle early Tuesday while walking on Dixie Highway.

It happened shortly after 3 a.m., according to a news release from Louisville Metro Police. That's when LMPD officers responded to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian near Shipley Lane.

Officers originally identified the victim as a man, but an update from the Jefferson County coroner's office said the victim is a woman -- 42-year-old Jessica Spaulding. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:28 a.m. from multiple blunt force injuries.

Police said Spaulding was wearing all dark clothing and was walking in the southbound lanes of Dixie Highway when she was hit by a car traveling in the same direction.

The driver immediately stopped and called 911, according to the news release.

LMPD's Traffic Unit is handling the investigation and no charges are expected.

The roadway reopened just before 7 a.m.
