LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There won't be new taxes in Brandenburg...for now.

Brandenburg City Council tabled two proposed taxes, an occupational tax and restaurant tax. But the city council will have to deal with the issue again.

The city in Meade County has just under 3,000 people. There are less than 25 restaurants in the small city.

The council moved its meetings from regular chambers to the city garage to accommodate everyone on Monday.

There wasn't a single person who spoke in favor of the proposed taxes.

Bruce and Becky Howard closed their ice cream shop early on Monday so they could attend the meeting. They're concerned about the 2% tax on everything they sell at the shop that also serves lunch

The Howards said they had just under $500 in sales on Monday. But if the task was in place, $10 of that total would be gone. Add the additional occupational tax into their sales, and they'd be taking home even less.

There are less than 25 restaurants in the small city.

They estimated the 2% restaurant tax would cost them around $1,700 a year.

Ultimately, the city council pushed both taxes down the road. But people are concerned about what the money would be used for, like funding a tourism board and general maintenance around the city.

The Howards said the lack of city council transparency is a big concern for them.

"If they say we got these big plans, we want to draw this in, this is what we need to do with it," Bruce Howard said. "But we haven't heard any of that."

This discussion is far from over. People have already been vocal about the tax online.

"Instead of being Facebook warriors to post your grievances and your good ideas on Facebook but not approaching your elected officials is not the way to do business," said Yolanda Clark, Brandenburg City Councilmember. "We have phone numbers and we have emails that you all, the city of Brandenburg pay for so that we can communicate with you effectively and facilitate discussion."

A new city council takes office in January and one council member said the issue is a good one for the new members to handle.
