BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Bullitt County Public Schools bus was sideswiped early Wednesday morning and police say the crash happened right outside Floyds Fork Estates, where residents say cars fly down their streets every day.
“They don't really pay attention to the speed limit signs,” said Robin Riley.
Riley has three grandchildren and is afraid to let them play outside in the front yard because of what she says is crazy driving. Not only does she see people speeding, but also ignoring stop signs.
“They're always just driving straight through it. Nobody, a lot of times, don't even slow down. They just go,” said Riley.
Residents say that type of driving led a white truck to crash into a school bus. The Bullitt County Sheriff’s Department says 26-year-old Christopher Hart was cited for leaving the scene of that accident.
“This gentleman says she'll normally wave or flash lights to pass around. This morning he didn't see that, however he continued to pass the bus but at that time the bus was also moving,” said Capt. Mike Murdoch.
Police say he hit the bus and just kept driving.
“From the back bumper all the way to the stop arm and the front end of the bus,” said BCPS Transportation Director Staci Goedde.
“He said the reason he left was he thought there was just damage to the mirror and would be no big deal because the way insurance usually works because a mirror hit is considered no swap,” said Capt. Murdoch.
No students were on the bus at the time, but their safety is always is a concern. Law enforcement says about 15 bus accidents happen every year in Bullitt County and less than four of them are injury accidents.
“When they're unloading students sometimes you have students that cross the road who cross over so that’s a real danger when you have people that run the stop arm on the bus...and that’s a daily occurrence,” said Goedde.
Riley questions if a truck runs into a bus, what will stop that person from seeing her?
“I'm scared to even get near the end of the driveway because they'll just fly down this hill,” she said.
The estimated damage on the bus is $1,500 dollars.
