LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new bakery in Louisville's Portland neighborhood was forced to delay its grand opening after two cars crashed through its front door on Monday.
It happened three days after Sugar Bakery passed its final health inspection.
Owner Maria McGary has been wanting to open up a bakery since the COVID-19 pandemic.
"No matter what happens, this is happening," McGary said. "And it just might take a little longer than any of us would like."
Seven months ago, that dream was starting to become a reality when she found a storefront. But on Monday, things took a turn.
"I couldn't take the call, and then he texted me the photos. And so I immediately called him back and realized that somebody had crashed into the front of the building," said McGary.
No one was seriously injured in the crash, but the bakery was damaged.
"Every time I come in here, I see something else that's broken," McGary said.
She's now trying to build back her dream of opening a bakery for the people of Portland as the people of Portland have supported her.
"You know, I'll be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when people are home. Because Portland (is) a really working neighborhood," she said. "The neighborhood has been great, I've been really fortunate with a lot of support. Portland's full of resilient characters, so, I'm just another one of them."
While McGary isn't sure when she will actually open, she's not giving up.
"This isn't devastating, it's just one more setback," she said.
McGary said her shop is located in an area of Bank Street where the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is conducting a road safety study, and said this is the second time cars have crashed into the building in the last two years.
