LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An annual spring festival centered around a centuries old tradition brought thousands of people to NuLu on Saturday.

Nulu Bock Fest and Wurst Fest was hosted in Louisville on East Market Street between Clay and Campbell streets. Local breweries, retail vendors and food trucks filled blocks up and down NuLu watch numerous goat races throughout the afternoon.

"I heard about goats racing and I figured that would be a good time," said Eric Karaglanis.

The seventh annual Bock Fest and Wurst Fest had more than 150 vendors as crowds spent the day celebrating the German tradition that dates back to the 19th century.

"I always like to say Bock Fest and Wurst Fest is Louisville's unofficial kickoff to spring," said Lauren Hendricks, a spokesperson for the event. "There's more people, there are more vendors, we actually expanded the footprint of the festival this year. Every year it grows. It's a great community event."

Organizers expected more than 20,000 people to attend the block party on Saturday.

After a disappointing last-place finish last year, WDRB Meteorologist Bryce Jones got a better result this time around in the Forecast Dash baby goat race.

"Much better, he did a great job," Jones said of the goat. "He was top 3, if the race had gone to the opposite barricade, he would have won."

The annual event is a favorite for many people who attended.

"Literally the best event in Louisville all year," said Danielle Mann.

The tradition traces back to the mid-19th Century to mark the changing of the season when dark German lager, known as bock, was released after a winter of aging.

There are many varieties of bock — Maibock, Dopplebock, and Eisbock. Although it is now almost always a lager, bock was originally an ale that was brewed by German monks in the Fourteenth Century. The monks would often drink the rich beer during their times of fasting.

Goat races are traditionally associated with Bock Day, as "bock" means "goat" in German.

This is the seventh year for the event in Louisville. For more information about the festival, click here.
