LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- When you're looking to add a cat or a dog to your family, the easiest place to look is online. The downfall of that is it's very easy to be sucked in by a scammer.
The puppy scam is a common one, where scammers advertise cute puppies for sale that they don't really have. They get you to send money, and then they disappear.
Now, the scam is spreading to kittens as well.
Recently, Ohio Maine Coons have become the most in-demand cat that everyone wants. Scammers list the ad and price it cheap, catching the eyes of many.
The SPCA recommends when looking for a pet, don't start by searching the internet. It's important to meet the rescuer or breeder at their home.
A real Maine Coon should cost $1,000 or more, and be paid normally. Not in gift cards like scammers typically ask for.
