LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thinking of getting a new iPhone 17? All the major carriers are offering deals right now, some even saying you can get a free phone.

If your phone is old and starting to slow down, you may be tempted by all the ads for a free iPhone 17, especially the Pro!

The ads are everywhere now, but how can a carrier give away an $800-$1,100 phone for nothing?

They can't - nothing is free. Reports show that the catch this year is that with many carriers, you have to upgrade to a more expensive plan, sometimes their most expensive one.

With AT&T, you will have to have the "Unlimited Extra" plan for $75 a line to get the free phone.

There are also many extras that will make your "free phone" anything but free.

Activation fee? $30-$50. Tax? $10. Case and a screen protector? $40. That's $100 right there.

If you are wanting the newest phone, officials said the early promo deals are the best you'll find for awhile.
