LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you're planning on buying a new phone, there's a way to find out if it's actually "new."

Most people don’t know this, but a letter in the serial number of your iPhone will tell you if your phone is new, used, or refurbished.

When you spend as much as $1,000 on a new iPhone, you would think it is brand new.

Recent reports in The Daily Mail, How-To-Geek, and other sites said every iPhone has a secret code in the model number that will tell you if it's new or refurbished.

To find out, go to "settings." Once you are there, go to the "general" tab and click on the "about" section.

The number in front of your model number will tell you whether it is new or used.

If it starts with an "M," it was a brand new phone when you activated it.

If it starts with "F," it was refurbished, and that someone else used it first.

If it starts with "N," it's a replacement device for a phone that was broke.

Apple Forums are filled with complaints from people who said it happened to them when they bought a discounted phone from a third party seller.

If it was refurbished from an independent repair shop, it may not have Apple warranty.

So, check the seller & your model number before you buy it, so you don't waste your money.
