LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Remember back during the pandemic when some restaurants added surcharges to help employees and pay for all the disinfecting?

The pandemic may be over, but some restaurants are still doing it.

One woman recently went to a birthday dinner and was surprised when she noticed that everyone in her party had a $1.39 fee on their bill.

According to the restaurant, the fee was instituted to cover charges such as napkins and straws. The guests, as you can imagine, were not happy.

Merchant or dining-in fees are just one of the things that add to your bill.

According to the National Restaurant Association, more than 10% of eateries still add surcharges to cover inflation, rising wages, and health insurance.

Some restaurants have added a line to their menu stating they've introduced a charge to help keep menu prices stable, but that's not the case for everyone.

Be sure to check your bill anytime you go out to eat, and don't be afraid to ask questions.
