LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky cities are scrambling to put rules in place for medical marijuana businesses.
Those businesses can start operating legally on Jan. 1, 2025, and the state will use a lottery system to issue licenses.
Only two dispensaries will be approved in Jefferson County to start. State law already restricts dispensaries from operating within 1,000 feet of schools or daycares.
On Thursday, the Metro Planning Commission voted to allow marijuana dispensaries to operate in Louisville with some additional restrictions, including keeping dispensaries 1,000 feet away from parks, community centers, libraries and religious buildings.
Exceptions will be granted on a case by case basis.
The commission's vote is just a recommendation and the Metro Council will ultimately have the final say.
