LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kroger is moving forward with plans to build a new $35 million Marketplace in Elizabethtown.

Officials are set to break ground on the new store at 1050 Ring Road on Friday, July 18.

That's according to a report from our partners at Louisville Business First, based on a news release from the company.

The $35 million project will include a fuel center, pharmacy with a drive-thru, a Little Clinic, a Wine & Spirits Shoppe, Murray’s Cheese Shop, Starbucks, a sushi bar, and home goods and apparel sections, according to the report.

"Kroger has been part of the Bluegrass landscape for 95 years and counting," Jake Cannon, president of Kroger's Louisville Division said in a written statement. "We’re excited to bring this new Marketplace to Elizabethtown with modern design elements and a focus on freshness to deliver a full, fresh and friendly shopping experience for every customer."

The investment comes soon after the grocery giant announced the closure of dozens of stores nationwide, including a location on South Third Street that serves the Wilder Park neighborhood -- frustrating residents in the area. Kroger announced the closings in its first quarter earnings report on June 20.

The company said it expected to see a modest financial benefit as a result of the closures.

In response to competition from Publix, Kroger recently spent $1.8 million to remodel its location in west Louisville

The Kroger Co. is one of Greater Louisville's largest employers, with about 5,000 local workers.
