LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Two Louisville entrepreneurs launched a glasses brand that could help patients with brain injuries.
According to our partners at Louisville Business First, Dr. Mark Lynn of Lynn Family Vision and his business partner, Jimmy Roth, developed specialized tinted glasses designed to help ease symptoms for people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries, strokes or migraines.
Manufactured under the brand Calm & Clear, the glasses aim to reduce visual confusion associated with those conditions. Lynn told LBF the glasses are designed to realign what is known as the vestibulo-ocular system, which helps keep vision focused and clear.
The tinting of the prescription glasses controls how light enters the eyes, allowing the brain to process it in the correct pattern.
"There are two pathways," Lynn said. "One carries where you are in time and space, and one carries the details of what you’re looking at. The time and space pathway must hit the brain first. If it doesn’t, then the details [have] nothing to set on."
The company received FDA approval about six weeks ago. Trials of the glasses are underway at several Norton Healthcare facilities across Louisville, and additional trials are set to begin soon with Louisville City FC, which practices at the Lynn Family Sports Vision & Training Center and plays at Lynn Family Stadium.
The glasses come in regular and transition lenses, and both styles can convert into sunglasses. Prices range from $359 to $459 depending on the style and lens type.
The glasses are currently manufactured by a U.S.-based laboratory, but at some point, the company would like to open its own lab. Lynn told LBF he currently has 150 pairs on hand and is waiting for a shipment of 5,000 more.
Lynn and Roth said they expect the glasses to be sold nationwide through the company's website in a matter of weeks.
