LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Olympic-level whitewater rapids attraction is coming to Clarksville, Indiana.
Renderings were released by the River Heritage Conservancy to our partners at Louisville's Business First of a preliminary design for the Whitewater Center at Origin Park.
The planned center will feature 4,200 feet of competitive and recreational channels. The nonprofit in charge of the design hope it will be a destination for athletes and revenue will go to wetland protection.
"We've assembled an incredible team to bring Whitewater to life,” Dennis Schnurbusch II, CEO of River Heritage Conservancy, said in the release to Louisville Business First. "Calibre's Olympic-level experience ensures that our course will not only deliver unforgettable thrills but meet international standards that could position us to one day host national and Olympic-qualifying events."
The design for Origin Park was created by Calibre Engineering's Whitewater Division, which was founded by Scott Shipley, a three-time Olympian in slalom kayaking. The developer projects the park will attract 1.5 million visitors annually and create 3,000 jobs.
In addition to the whitewater courses, the park will include 22 miles of public trails, paddling launch sites, The Vista event center and, eventually, an Outdoor Adventure Park complete with zip lines, climbing walls and restaurants.
