LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A quick bathroom break during a family road trip through Kentucky turned into a $150,000 Powerball win for an Alabama couple.
Theresa and James Stuckey of Enterprise, Alabama, were traveling to Kentucky to pick up their son, who had spent the summer with family in Ohio. The family typically meets around Bowling Green, which is roughly halfway between them.
On the drive home, the couple stopped at the Pilot Travel Center in Franklin, Kentucky. During the stop, Theresa Stuckey bought a Powerball ticket for the Aug. 1 drawing.
Theresa Stuckey matched enough numbers to win $50,000, but the Power Play tripled her prize to $150,000.
"I looked at my phone, and I just sat there for a second. I was like, 'No way. That can't be real!'" she said.
The couple returned to Kentucky to claim their prize. After taxes, they took home $108,750.
The Stuckeys said they plan to use the winnings to pay off vehicles, help their daughter with college expenses and take a family vacation.
The next Powerball drawing is Saturday, Aug. 15, at 11 p.m. EDT. The jackpot is estimated at $20 million.
The Kentucky Lottery has paid out nearly $1.8 billion in prizes this year. Its proceeds fund scholarships and grants for more than 1.1 million college students across the state.
