LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Plans are moving forward to build a massive affordable housing complex at the former site of a longtime downtown Louisville car dealership.
A downtown review committee approved the project at 4th and Broadway this week.
Renderings show 11 different buildings set to go up at the site of the old Brown Bros. Cadillac dealership. Plans call for a 3-4-story, 221,000-square-foot, multi-family residential complex.
Two historic structures included on the property will remain in place and be incorporated.
Plans also show space for about five storefronts to move into some of the buildings.
The project, called "Motorworks," will include more than 300 affordable housing units on the 5.35-acre property, which takes up a city block.
Brown Bros. closed in mid-February of 2021 after more than 75 years in business. The dealership's owners decided to take a buyout of their franchise from General Motors rather than spend about $250,000 installing charging stations and other changes necessary to sell electric cars.
The site went up for sale in March the same year for $9 million. At the time of its listing, agents said it was one of the largest sites available for redevelopment in downtown Louisville.
At the time, the site was home to several buildings and a large parking lot. Crews began tearing those buildings down in June 2023.
LDG, the developer behind several affordable housing projects in Louisville, bought the site.
