LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Residents of a new mixed-income community will celebrated Thanksgiving for the first time in southern Indiana.
The New Albany Housing Authority is developing new housing options after demolishing a barrack-style community in the Beechwood neighborhood.
David Duggins, executive director of the New Albany Housing Authority, said residents are thankful for the new homes.
"We're overly happy with how construction has gone," Duggins said. "When we lease up a new family here, the joy you see from the excitement to having your own home and the excitement of children being able to run around and pick out their own bedroom."
The roughly $25 million project is being funded by a tax credit, a bank loan and an additional $2.5 million from the City of New Albany's American Rescue Plan dollars. The first phase, consisting of single-family homes and duplexes, was completed earlier this year. All four phases should be finished by spring of 2025.
Residents of the public housing moved into the new homes earlier this year.Â
Linda Goble moved into her new home in September.
"I love it, it's quiet here," Goble said. "Nobody bothers you."
The units and amenities help accommodate the residents to the entire community despite residents having to qualify for the spaces. Each resident will pay a maximum of 30% of their income.
Goble and her mother will enjoy spending time together on Thanksgiving.
"I love it because I can cook, I don't have to worry about people running back and forth through the door," Goble said.Â
Duggins said homes in the first three phases are already completely leased up.
