LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday for an apartment complex aimed at giving people without homes a place to live.Â
Sheehan Landing is now accepting residents. About a year ago, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the complex off Preston Highway. Now that it's done, it will help provide long-term support for individuals in need.Â
The apartments are the result of a partnership between the St. John Center and other organizations that will address the housing crisis in Louisville. The building has 80 furnished one-bedroom units and will provide permanent housing for the city's most vulnerable population.Â
One future resident said it makes him feel hopeful.
"You don't know where you're going to spend the night, who is going to be around you, who is going to hurt you or what you're going to have the next day," said William Sieveking, a new resident of Sheehan Landing. "Being at a facility like this, you have people that want to help you out. (It) makes me hopeful again."
In addition to permanent affordable housing, the building is staffed around the clock to help provide resources for other issues like mental or behavioral health.
For nearly 40 years, the St. John Center has been providing services for people experiencing homelessness but this will be the first housing facility.
