LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Inspector General for the United States Postal Service has released its audit report of Louisville's distribution center.
In January, WDRB Investigates obtained video from the Gardiner Lane location that showed bins full of undelivered mail, leaving people waiting weeks, even months, for their mail and packages. While the USPS initially blamed the delays on snowy weather, residents said the issues have persisted.
The delays caught the attention of the federal government. In April, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General launched four separate audits in Louisville — one at the Gardiner Lane facility, and at branches in Pleasure Ridge Park, Middletown and Iroquois Station. The audits at those three branches focused on delivery operations and property conditions.
When the audits began, Louisville was the only city with four active USPS audits happening at the same time.
The audit of the Gardiner Lane facility was aimed at evaluating the efficiency of the center’s operations.
The report released this week identifies issues in five areas: Clearance times, delayed mail, late, canceled and extra outbound trips, scan compliance, and facility safety and security.
One of the biggest findings was that on April 1 and April 2, there were more than 112,000 pieces of delayed mail, some of which had been at the facility since Jan. 30.
Another 177 packages were also identified in the Priority Mail Express area that were not dispatched on time or reported as delayed in the system.
