LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Construction on a busy road connecting Fern Creek and Jeffersontown will begin next week, so drivers in Louisville will need to budget more time for their commute.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet designed a project that will implement spot improvements and reconstruct segments of Billtown Road from north of Colonnades Place to south of Easum Road in southeast Jefferson County. The purpose of the project is to improve corridor wide capacity, operations and safety.
As of 2021, the route carries around 13,500 vehicles per day. Kentucky State Police reported from 2015-19 that a 1.2 mile segment on the state roadway had 138 crashes, including 25 injury accidents.

The construction project has already left some drivers frustrated.
"The construction is just terrible," said Ann Kerberg, who lives off Billtown Road. "It wouldn't be so bad during the morning hours and stuff, but once the school buses stop in the afternoon, you can't get out of here. I have to plan my day around the construction."
There are already signs of preparation work around Easum Road, Lovers Lane, Mary Dell lane, Michael Edward Drive, Fairground Road, Vantage Creek and Colonnades Place. Flynn Construction started prepping for the work on Monday.

"It's just something we're going to have to deal with," said Richard Atherton. "It's something I dealt with over on Blue Lake Road when they were doing all that for five years. But it ended up beign pretty nice."
Most roads get a new turning lane. Mary Dell Lane will get a school crossing traffic light while Fairground Road will get a traffic light.
"Glad to see our taxpayer dollars being spent in a good way," Mike Cleary said. "You just got to slow down and follow the signs."
Lovers Lane will be reevaluated after construction is complete.
"My fear, there's been a number of wrecks up there," Kerberg said.
Lovers Lane could get a traffic light later on.
Crews expect to be finished with the construction project next spring.
