LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two brothers who were arrested after fighting broke out on a Jefferson County Public Schools bus last week pleaded not guilty to several charges during a court appearance Monday.Â
Terrence Bevly, 18, and Nicholas Byrd, 19, are charged with disorderly conduct, menacing and resisting arrest. Bevly is also charged with assaulting an officer. They are not students, but are family members of a student on the bus.Â
Police said several fights broke out on the bus on Oct. 12 as it was transporting students home from Westport Middle School. The bus then pulled over into a parking lot in St. Matthews. Police say family members started showing up and a fight broke out among adults.
The female bus driver told police she felt threatened by the two men who were family members of a student. She told WDRB News the windows on the bus were open and she could smell students smoking marijuana. She said the bus was packed with 73 Westport Middle students, and there had been problems before the bus even left the school.
The driver said when she was driving, students were cussing at her, rocking the bus and opening the rear and side emergency doors.
The driver said two students jumped out of the back door of the moving bus onto Shelbyville Road. JCPS says three students have been disciplined over the incident.
According to the arrest report, Bevly went to the driver-side window of the bus and started arguing with the driver. A Louisville Metro Police officer at the scene told the men to leave, but they refused. Both were arrested at the scene.Â
Bevly and Byrd were ordered not to have contact with the bus driver or JCPS. They're expected back in court next month.
