2 men taken to the hospital after shooting in New Albany, police say

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two men were shot and taken to the hospital in New Albany on Monday evening, according to police.

According to New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey, police responded to a shooting at 1829 Culbertson Avenue around 7:05 p.m. Once police arrived on scene, they found a man who had been shot. He was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, but his condition isn't known at this time.

Police said a second man believed to be involved in the shooting was taken by private means to Baptist Floyd Hospital. He was then taken to University of Louisville Hospital, but his conditioned isn't known at this time.

WDRB News saw two people being taken into custody after the shooting. The two males were put into police cars, but Bailey didn't know their involvement or ages.

"I don't have any idea of what led to the incident, but I do understand that there were multiple shots fired," Bailey said. "We believe we have all persons involved in custody right now. We don't believe there is any imminent threat to public safety."

Bailey said in a news release additional information will be released by the Floyd County Prosecutor's Office.

WDRB News interviewed neighbors who said they witnessed the aftermath of the shooting.

"We heard the lady run out of the house yelling 'Oh my god, I need help, call 911'," Mike Baker, a neighbor said to WDRB News.

New Albany Police detectives and Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting.

Earlier this month, a man was arrested after a shooting at a New Albany gas station. Bailey dismissed the idea of a rise in crime in the southern Indiana city.

"In New Albany, our crime statistics are good, but the last few weeks we've had a slight increase but as compared to previous years, violent crime is way down in New Albany this year," Bailey said. "We're proud of that, we have a hard-working police department and a community that believes in safety. Just some bad actors the past couple weeks have put us in the spotlight."
