LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A pair a pair of tortoises that were stolen from the Indianapolis Zoo earlier this month were found safe.

They were taken sometime between 10 a.m. Oct. 10 and 10 a.m. Oct. 12, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

According to release, both species — an Egyptian tortoise and a Northern Spider tortoise — are currently listed as critically endangered.

Police said in an update Tuesday that the Pendleton Police Department received a call at 4 p.m. from visitors at Falls Park that they found an unattended cardboard box.

The box had a paper plate on top with a note referencing the Indianapolis Zoo.

The tortoises were found inside and police arrived within minutes to take them. Their microchips confirmed to Zoo officials that these were the missing tortoises.
