LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville police released body camera video on Friday of officers shooting a man who was wanted for shooting a southern Indiana sheriff's deputy.

Seven police officers fired at the suspect, 33-year-old Austin Schepers, who Louisville Metro Police Chief Paul Humphrey said appeared to "attempt to set up an ambush and shoot several officers."

According to Indiana State Police, Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Zac Andry was shot four times during a traffic stop on Highway 150 near West Baden at 12:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3., by Schepers.

ISP said Andry noticed a car pulled over on the side of the highway. During the stop, Andry suspected criminal activity and asked Schepers to step out of the car. That's when ISP said Schepers shot Andry and sped off.

The next day, on Saturday, Jan. 4, officers identified Schepers after an extensive manhunt in the backyard of a house in Wheeler Avenue, off Taylor Boulevard in Louisville, through helicopter surveillance.

Officers arrived in the back alley, shouted at Schepers to show his hands before shots are fired. In the helicopter video, Schepers is clearly seen firing several shots toward the back alley with what Humphrey said was a handgun. As soon as he fired, the body camera video shows a barrage of gunfire erupting from the officers.

"I think you can see from the video how dangerous this situation was," Humphrey said. "The subject appeared to set up an ambush and attempt to shoot several officers again. We are very grateful that no one else was injured besides for the suspect in this situation."

Humphrey said four LMPD officers and three U.S. Marshals deputies returned fire.

"Hold fire! Hold fire! He's down!" one officer shouts from the alley. The officers slowly approach him, lying in the grass near the back of the house. Schepers was pronounced dead on the scene.

There was a heavy police presence in the area, but no police officers or people in the area were injured in the shooting, LMPD said.

Benjamin Derby, Jan Dykes, Robert Ross and Joshua Trumbo, all detectives in LMPD's Criminal Interdiction Division. It's unclear who fired the fatal shot.

ISP said Andry underwent surgery not long after the shooting and was reported in critical condition, but stable, at UofL Health Hospital in downtown Louisville. Master Trooper Philip Hensley said last week Andry is under sedation and is being assisted with the use of a ventilator.

"Doctors and specialists remain optimistic and are pleased with the amount of fight that Deputy Andry continues to put forth towards his recovery," Hensley said in a news release. "While each day has continued to bring new medical challenges, Andry has continued to press forward and overcome those trials."

On Friday, Humphrey said Andry remains in critical condition. He and the Orange County sheriff both asked for prayers as Andry lays in the hospital.
