LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The name of a Louisville teenager who died days after being shot outside a high school football game has been released.

The Jefferson County Coroner identified 17-year-old Aaron D. Esters, Jr. of Louisville on Friday. The teen died Tuesday. He had been in critical condition since being rushed to the hospital nine days earlier.

A family member confirmed to WDRB that he attended Valley High School.

Valley's principal, Jennie Currin, sent a letter home to families on Thursday confirming that a student had passed away. The letter did not name the student.

"As you may be aware, one of our students has passed away," Currin wrote. "Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family during this difficult time. We thank them for allowing us to share in the student's life."

The letter offered contact information for JCPS counselors as well as resources from mental health organizations on age-appropriate ways to cope with grief and loss.

The teen died nine days after a double shooting on Sunday, Sept. 29 outside of a football game between Pleasure Ridge Park and Male High Schools.

A second juvenile was also shot that night. He showed up at UofL Health - Mary and Elizabeth Hospital the night of the shooting, but his injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening.

LMPD's Homicide Unit continues to investigate, but no arrests have been made.
