LOUISVILLE, Ky., (WDRB) – A local attorney has been arrested for allegedly giving her client documents soaked in synthetic drugs during a meeting Wednesday at the Roederer Correctional Complex in La Grange.
Ashlea Hellmann, a defense attorney and former public defender in Louisville, was charged in Oldham County with felony trafficking in synthetic drugs and promoting contraband.
Hellmann was allegedly in possession of documents soaked in drugs known as K2 and K3 while meeting in an attorney-client area in the prison around 3:30 p.m. She allegedly passed the inmate the papers which he put in a folder, according to a Kentucky State Police citation.
The drug is also known as “spice” and “synthetic weed,” and reportedly has effects similar to marijuana.
Hellmann, 34, agreed to talk to police, saying she was given the documents by her client’s family members and “knew something was wrong and she should have known better to do it,” according to the citation.
The KSP arrest report alleges that “it’s apparent” Hellmann and her client have been in a relationship and “that is possibly the motivation for bringing the papers in.”
The papers will be sent off for more testing.
Hellmann’s bond was set at $5,000 cash. She has been released from jail.
An arraignment date has not been publicly scheduled, according to online records.
Attorney Kevin Glowgower, who represents Hellmann, declined to comment at this time.
Hellman has been in the media frequently over the past few years after filing lawsuits against Louisville police.
She recently won a ruling allowing her to use the Department of Justice report on Louisville police in a lawsuit against the department.
In a recent WDRB News story, Hellmann said it is an important ruling that "helps prove patterns with LMPD that we all know exists.
"I think that, in my opinion, it shows that the court sees the DOJ report as being more than just skepticism or theory," she said in an interview. "They see it as being valid evidence that a jury should hear."
