LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police arrested five people and seized three cars in the city's latest street racing bust.
It happened around 7 p.m. Sunday. Police said a detective was there when it happened in an unmarked LMPD cruiser and made the arrests.
One of the cars had a license plate that read "no cop."
Under the city's street racing ordinance, the cars seized can be held for the next six months.
Two handguns were also recovered during the bust, police said.
Louisville police have been cracking down on street racing for more than a year. The street racing ordinance gives city officials the authority to impound a vehicle used in street racing for six months and impose a $1,000 fine.
The ordinance also requires drivers to plead their case before the Louisville Code Enforcement Board to get their vehicle back instead of contesting the charge in court.
Street racing isn't just confined to Louisville. Cities nationwide struggle with the issue, and some are looking to Louisville's ordinance for guidance.
Last September, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg touted an "innovative approach" by some states to crush the cars they confiscate from street racing, adding that he would "strongly support" legislation to allow that.
Kentucky Rep. Jason Nemes, R-Middletown, said last November he planned to file legislation this session that would allow cars seized in street racing to be crushed.
