LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man was fatally shot Friday afternoon in the Algonquin neighborhood.
John Bradley, a spokesperson for Louisville Metro Police, said officers responded to the 1600 block of Dixie Highway just after 2:30 p.m. on a reported shooting.
Police found a male, whose age was unconfirmed at the time, who had been shot. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim Saturday morning as 18-year-old Jerrick Young.
Witnesses at the scene told WDRB the victim was leaving JJ Food Mart when he was gunned down.
"I was like 'keep breathing, keep breathing,' and the next thing I know, he turned his head over and he was gone," said Taleia Means, who was inside the convenience store when the shooting happened. "We heard some shots so we all ran to the back and somebody was like, lock the door. I was lookin' around and that is when I seen the guy laying in front of (a) car."
Within seconds, the victim died. But just five minutes earlier, he was in the store buying a few things and was on his way.
"He had just walked out of the store and somebody pulled up and did that to him and pulled off," Means said.
She didn't get a good look at the person who pulled the trigger, but Means said police were right around the corner.
"There were numerous shots were detected on our Shot Spotter and we canvassed that area," LMPD Maj. Russell Miller said. But police don't believe those shots are connected to the shooting.
Homicides are up in Louisville over the past two years. Police said there are a variety of reasons for the increase and there is no one way to curb the violence. But, like many, Miller said the violence has become too much.
“The police department and the men and women that work here are absolutely doing their job and I can tell you, from my point and just about everyone that works here, I am sick of it, the officers are sick of it, our command staff is sick of it, the citizens of this community are sick of it, the mayor's office and the support we have there everyone wants this to stop," Miller said.
LMPD's Homicide Unit is investigating, but has no suspects and has made no arrests.
