LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville residents now have access to the city's newly released gun violence dashboard that was officially unveiled Tuesday morning.

The dashboard uses data dating back to 2010 to track gun violence in the city. Users can sort by neighborhood, year, crime type and zip codes to get data and information on gun violence. The map is updated daily.

LMPD and city officials joined the mayor for the official announcement Tuesday morning. The Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods received a $100,000 national grant from Everytown for Safety Support Fund to make the dashboard possible. Officials have been working with LMPD for the past year to create the dashboard.

There have been 140 homicides this year, according to LMPD -- an 84 percent increase from the number of homicides in the city five years ago. In addition, another 373 people have been wounded by gunfire this year, but data indicates that non-fatal shootings have dropped 10 percent compared to last year, according to LMPD.

City officials and LMPD leaders hope having such information readily available and top of mind, will lead to more action to reduce gun violence in the city.

"And until people are talking about the tragedies of gun violence every day, particularly concentrated in neighborhoods of poverty, neighborhoods that are primarily Black people living we're not going to get change," Mayor Craig Greenberg said. "And we need change, and this data can help advocate for change."

LMPD said it is already using the information to make decisions on where to place staffing and resources in the city. The public-facing online dashboard is free to use.
