LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- After an hours long standoff Friday night in downtown New Albany, police were unable to find who they believed was the suspect who allegedly shot a sheriff's deputy earlier in the day.

A shelter in place was originally put into effect Friday evening for an area of downtown New Albany, Indiana, due to ongoing police standoff.

A police officer initially told WDRB at the scene that the standoff in the area of E. Market Street was possibly for a man who allegedly shot an Orange County sheriff's deputy early Friday morning.

According to Indiana State Police, Zac Andry stopped around 12:30 a.m. Friday when he noticed a car pulled over on the side of Highway 150 and Indiana State Road 56 near West Baden.

During the stop, ISP said Andry suspected criminal activity and asked Austin Schepers, 33, to step out of the car. That's when police said Schepers shot the deputy and sped off.

ISP said in an update that Schepers, from Jasper, was at that New Albany location earlier in the day. ISP said a search warrant was obtained for the house in the 1800 block of E. Market Street Friday evening, but no one was found in the home.

Tim Bateman was at Vic's Café in downtown New Albany Friday night when the shelter in place was put into effect.

Bateman said he saw about 30 police cars in the area and SWAT.

"It's unnerving being locked in here," Bateman said.

Shane Curry, who lives in the area, said he started to hear a bunch of police outside and found his street surrounded by cops.

"All I know is my daughter let my dog out, next thing I know she comes running in, saying there's cops outside," Curry said. "I didn't pay it no attention, sitting in the living room with the kids and wife, I heard a bunch of commotion so I go outside and our street is surrounded by cops."

Schepers is described as a 5-foot-7-inch, 150-pound man with brown hair and hazel eyes. He also has a tattoo of a cross under his left eye and multiple tattoos around his neck.

He was last seen driving a silver 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix with the Indiana license plate CRT921. ISP said in an update around 8 a.m. Friday that Schepers' vehicle was located in the Orangeville area, which is about 10 miles north of West Baden.

ISP said Schepers is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Anyone with information about Schepers is asked to call 911, or the Indiana State Police Bloomington Post at 812-332-4411.

The New Albany Police Department has not responded to a request for more information.
