HENRYVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Two people face charges after a road rage shooting on Interstate 65 sent a man to the hospital last week. Now, a passenger in one of the vehicles is sharing her side of what happened.
"My whole life flashed in front of me," Carmen Yoest said. "It just all happened so fast."
Her boyfriend and caregiver, Ricky Hill, was driving them home in her white Chrysler van the afternoon of Dec. 6, 2024.
They were on I-65 near Henryville when she said Hill got behind a slow driver in a red Ford Bronco. Police said that driver was 30-year-old Kasey Haven.
Indiana State Police Trooper Philip Hensley said both vehicles were "speeding up, slowing down and just not pulling over," and exchanging gestures while driving.
"We see middle fingers," Yoest said while walking WDRB News through the events before the shooting. "The mirrors touch each other."
Yoest said she's not certain who was at fault. ISP said the two cars sideswiped each other on the highway.
"Then, I see the barrel of a gun outside of the driver side window," Yoest said.
She said Hill flashed his gun at Haven in response before the two drivers stopped on the off-ramp from I-65 North to State Road 160. ISP said that's where Haven got out of her car and fired her gun four times.
Hill was shot in the arm and left the scene in the damaged van. Court documents reveal he left Yoest on the shoulder of the highway.
"After (my boyfriend) gets shot in the van, she tells me to get the f*** down, that she's gonna f***ing kill me and opens her weapon twice at me," Yoest said.
She said the bullets grazed her leg. Hill stopped at a nearby gas station where first responders took him to UofL Hospital. He was treated and released.
"I know Ricky was wrong with his handling," Yoest said. "But we did not deserve to be shot at."
Court documents reveal Haven called 911 during the incident, and told the operator in part "he was running. I had to shoot him mam" and "he was reaching for something."
Haven was detained at the scene and eventually charged with aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon, intimidation with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, pointing a firearm at another person and aggressive driving. A judge entered a not-guilty plea for Haven.
Hill was arrested Thursday and charged with intimidation with a deadly weapon and aggressive driving. He also pled not guilty.
